Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.
This attractive chain from the Victorian (ca1880s) era is a wonderful example of the Niello craft! Made of sterling silver, the chain is composed of 21 ellipse shaped links, which alternate with small oval jump rings. Every link features intricate Niello detailing, which adds to the unique appearance of the chain. At the back of the necklace is a Niello swivel watch clasp and at the center is a large Niello spring ring clasp, making it easy to hang a complementary locket or pendant if desired. A fabulous and versatile everyday piece, it is a wonderful example of the Niello art form and would make an excellent addition to any collection!
Measurements: The entire length of the chain measures 18" long. Each link measures 5/8" long and 1/8" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the chain is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the the sterling silver niello links. The spring ring and watch swivel clasps are secure and in working order.
