Pietra Dura is an art-historical term for the technique of using small, exquisitely cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create what amounts to a painting in stone. The stonework is assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section is practically invisible.
A fantastic Pietra Dura fly pendant necklace from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! Crafted in 18k vibrant yellow gold, this necklace features an oval-shaped pendant. The Pietra Dura pendant depicts a small fly, which has yellowish-green wings and a brown head and legs. The fly is encased within a smooth and simple gold frame. The top of the pendant features a complementary bail, and the piece is accompanied by a dainty gold chain, which secures with a spring ring clasp. A fabulous and unique piece, this pendant necklace would make a great addition to any Victorian-era jewelry collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 5/8" long, has a width of 1/2", and a depth of 1/8". The chain measures 16" long.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting. The Pietra Dura pendant is secure and intact. The chain and spring ring clasp are both intact and in working order.
