A spectacular lorgnette from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, the piece consists of a pair of folding opera glasses encased in a simple lorgnette setting. The stem of the lorgnette are detailed with a sleek textured pillar design. A button above the pillar stem slides down to release the expandable, spring loaded eyeglasses. The glasses bridge is textured with the same pillar design as the stem. A gold ring readies the lorgnette to hang from a favorite chain. This simple lorgnette would make a fabulous pendant or antique curio!
Measurements: The handle measures just over 2" long and 1/8" wide at the stem. The ring at the base of the handle measures just over 1/2" in diameter. The retractible eyeglasses measure 3 7/8" wide when expanded and each lens measures 1 3/8" in diameter.
Condition: The lorgnette is in overall good antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold stem or mechanisms. The eyeglasses expand easily and stay secure once placed within the gold cover. The glass lenses display light scratches. There is a natural patina on the surface of the gold setting, which is normal for antique jewelry and adds to its unique beauty and character.
