A spectacular lorgnette from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) period! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, the piece consists of a pair of folding glasses encased in a breathtaking repousse lorgnette setting. The front and the back of the lorgnette are detailed with a winged cherub and a floral detail. A button below the cherub slides to release the expandable lorgnette. The glasses bridge displays a double fish motif. A gold ring (marked "14K") readies the lorgnette to hang from a favorite chain. This unique lorgnette would make a fabulous pendant!
Measurements: The handle measures approximately 7/8" across at the widest point, and 9/32" at the thickest point. The retractible eyeglasses measure 3 13/16" wide when expanded and each lens measures 1 3/8" in diameter.
Condition: The lorgnette is in overall good antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold repousse setting. The eyeglasses expand easily and stay secure once placed within the gold cover. The glass lenses display light scratches. There is a natural patina on the surface of the gold setting, which is normal for antique jewelry and adds to its unique beauty and character.
