Victorian Japanese Shakudo Mixed Metals Asil Rooster & Owl Locket
Shakudo is the use of mixed metal alloys and was originally used in Japanese armor and swords. Artisans would sometimes remove the Shakudo plaques from the armor and incorporate it into jewelry or art. It has become very collectible and quite unusual.
This rare and fabulous piece from the Victorian era (ca1880) is a wonderful example of the Shakudo art form! The mixed metals rectangular-shaped locket is crafted with a 14kt rose gold encasement and has a unique double-sided feature. The design comes alive with 3-dimensional details that depict artistic Asian birds in simple Japanese scenery. On the front surface is a grandiose Asil (or Aseel) Rooster, that is in mid-step, standing next to a single daffodil flower and a small posted sign. The background of the image has subtle carved textures, depicting a grassy surrounding and a round sun can be seen in the sky. The reverse side of the locket displays a majestic owl resting upon a tree branch. Several leaves hang from the tree and a waning crescent moon can be seen in the sky. The raised details on both sides are crafted in bright yellow and rose gold hues and sterling silver that stand out perfectly against the matte, oxidized background. When opened, the interior of the locket reveals a glass covered space for storing a special photograph inside. Completing the design is a simple ring bail at the top, perfect for hanging the piece from a favorite chain. A true work of art, this artistic Shakudo locket would make a marvelous addition to any collection!
Measurements: The entire piece hangs approximately 1 1/4" long (including the bail). The locket itself measures a little more than 7/8" tall, 5/8" wide, and 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the the rose gold encasement and both Shakudo designs are in excellent condition. The locket opens easily and snaps securely shut, the glass locket face is intact and the bail is securely attached.
