SKU: 45411

$1,895
Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the image appears to be almost three dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs.

This reverse carved crystal pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era is a wonderful example of the craft! The carved Essex crystal cabochon rests on a reflective foil-backed background and is set within a 15k rosy yellow gold bezel frame. The detailed hand painted image is incredibly realistic, portraying a lifelike eagle mid-call. The detailed carving highlights the eagle's sharp eye and hooked beak as well as the feathers cascading down his neck. Surrounding the outside of the oval frame is a very delicate spoked border, a lovely finishing touch. The reverse side of the piece has a smooth gold back and at the top of the pendant holds a simple 14k bail. A very unique and artistic piece, it is perfect for any equestrian lover or collector of reverse carved Essex crystal!

Measurements: The pendant measures approximately 7/8" in diameter, and is just under 1/2" thick. The bail measures just over an 1/8" wide and just under 1/4" tall.

Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the reverse carved crystal. The pin clasp is secure and in good condition.
