Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the picture appears to be almost three-dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork but animals were some of the most common used.
A fabulous pair of reverse carved crystal cufflinks from the Retro (ca1940s) era! With a classic sport motif, this pair of cufflinks is crafted in 14kt yellow gold, and each displays a hand painted picture of a charming fox. The intricate and 3-dimensional paintings are done on the reverse side of a square rock crystal cabochon which is closed with a mother of pearl background. The images are highly detailed with textured red, brown and white fur, expressive facial features, pointed ears and an open mouth which displays a bright red tongue. Each cufflink is backed in 14kt gold and connects to a flat gold disk on the other side by a connecting bar link stamped "14K". This stunning set would look beautiful worn by a man or woman and would make a perfect addition to any collection!
Measurements: The square rock crystal faces measure approximately 5/8" wide and tall and 1/4" thick and the gold disks measure 5/8" in diameter. The connecting bars measure 5/8" in length.
Condition: The overall condition of the cufflink set is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the rock crystals or to the gold settings and the painted images remain in excellent condition.
