Victorian Sterling/14kt Pietra Dura Earrings & Locket/Pendant Set
Pietra Dura is an art-historical term for the technique of using small, exquisitely cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create what amounts to a painting in stone. The stonework is assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section is practically invisible.
A stunning Pietra Dura set from the Victorian (ca1880) era! The lovely set is comprised of a beautiful locket/pendant and a pair of matching earrings. Most likely of Italian descent, this fabulous set is made of blackened sterling silver and 14kt gold and carries a rich floral design. Both earrings as well as the large locket/pendant have a black stone plaque that rests in the center of the ornate sterling setting. In the middle of the plaque is a wonderful floral design which is portrayed by aqua, pale pink, green and white inlaid stones. The design is so fine that it almost appears to be a painting. Surrounding each floral Pietra Dura image is a bold sterling silver frame, decorated with 14kt gold topped beadwork. On the back of the pendant is a glass covered locket face which is perfect for your favorite photograph and the entire piece hangs from a large, complimentary bail. The earrings hang from modern 14kt yellow gold wires that appear to have been changed from their original wires. Unusual and beautiful, this breathtaking set would make a stunning addition to any collection!
Measurement: The pendant hangs 2 7/8" long, is slightly less than 2" at the widest point, and 1/4" thick. The earrings hang approximately 2" long, are 3/4" wide and have a depth of slightly more than 1/8".
Condition: The overall condition of the locket/pendant and earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling and gold setting or to the Pietra Dura design. The glass covered locket is secure and in good working condition and the earrings wires are intact.
