Victorian Rare 18k Etruscan Micro Mosaic Bird Locket + Woven Chain in Box
An incredible micro mosaic necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This outstanding Etruscan piece is crafted in vibrant 18kt gold, and is comprised of a folding locket pendant that hangs from a woven chain. Decorating the surface of the locket is a highly detailed micro mosaic motif, which depicts a pair of birds at the center of an elaborate border. The delicate mosaic tiles have been meticulously hand cut and set, forming a tapestry of colors that bring the imagery to life. Both white birds resemble peace doves, holding springs of leaves and flowers in their beaks. Additional flowers and flourishes form a patchwork design that decorates the border and the wide bail.
Fine Etruscan wirework and delicate beadwork adds further detail to both sides of the pendant, including the word "ROMA" on the reverse side of the piece. A hinge across the top of the bail opens the folding locket, revealing a glass-covered space with a fabric backing. The removable frame allows a favorite photograph to be easily stored inside. Accompanying the pendant is a woven gold chain, which boasts the same high-karat finish, and fastens with a decorative push clasp in the back. A raised leaf and grape motif adorns the center of the clasp, reminiscent of ancient Roman artwork. The necklace comes in the original antique box, which is custom-fitted to hold the locket and chain inside. When worn together as a set, the overall effect is a truly magnificent statement necklace that is impossible to miss!
