Not many people are aware that Newark, New Jersey was a major hub for the manufacture of jewelry from the late 1800s until the 1950s. The Allsopp Brothers influenced this trend, making their mark in the jewelry arena with fine designs that included gemstone rings and birthstone jewelry. Henry and George A. Allsop, both English natives, founded their business in Newark in 1887 as "H. Allsopp & Co." (later changed to "Allsopp Bros"). What began as a small venture grew to a steady business with many employees and several traveling salesmen. Today, the original Allsopp Brothers pieces are still desirable and valued by collectors!

This magnificent turquoise ring from the Art Nouveau (ca1900s) era is a signed piece by the Allsopp Brothers! The ring displays a cabochon turquoise stone that is bezel set at the center of a decorative 14kt gold carved setting. The dome-like turquoise stone is substantial in size and exhibits a vibrant robin's egg blue color accented by naturally occurring veins of deep brown (known as "matrix"), giving the stone a striking marbled appearance. Decorating each shoulder is a sculpted butterfly motif, which is carved with flowing swirls and flourishes, providing wonderful depth and texture. The smooth band tapers slightly towards the back and stamped inside of the shank is a "14K" gold purity mark beside the signature Allsopp Brothers' hallmark symbol (the letter "A" beside a small 5-point star). When worn, the ring is quite substantial in appearance and makes a significant statement. Perfect for the turquoise lover, it would make an outstanding accessory!

Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 5.5, but could be re-sized slightly if desired. The turquoise centerpiece has a 5/8" diameter and rests approximately 3/8" above the finger when worn. The graduated band measures 4.5mm wide at the back. The overall pennyweight of the piece is 11.4dwt (17.7 grams).

Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or turquoise cabochon, which is intact and securely set. There is a light natural patina on the surface of the gold, which is normal for Art Nouveau era jewelry and adds to its unique beauty and character.
