Georgian Dramatic 18kt Swiss Enamel Day/Night Earrings
Swiss Enameled pieces were commonly produced to be sold as souvenirs for Victorian travelers. A very fine type of enameling, this technique used very intricate detail and often portrayed scenic Swiss Alps villages with streams, mountains and wonderful homes and churches. These serene images were produced by first covering a piece of metal in a neutral enameled color. A wonderful detailed picture was then painted on the enameled base and re-fired to set the image. A clear glaze was then applied to the image to preserve it. The pieces were often set in a hollow frame making them very light and comfortable to wear.
Although these earrings do not depict a scenic Swiss image, they are indeed a wonderful example of the fine Swiss enamel craft! The earrings are from the Georgian period (ca1830) and have an elaborate enameled design. Each earring features a detachable surmount, allowing them to be worn either as a simple "day" earring, or a more dramatic "night" earring. The enameled "night" design is quite intricate, consisting of textured links, dangling charms at the sides, and a centerpiece boasting rich black, red, white, and blue colors. The Swiss enamel work is simply marvelous, and carries around both sides of the earrings. The earrings have a hollow fabrication, making them wonderfully lightweight and comfortable to wear, despite their substantial size and length. Each surmount fastens with the original earring wires that hook in the front. When worn, they dangle with exceptional movement, framing the face beautifully. Perfect for the serious antique jewelry lover, they would make a magnificent addition to any Swiss enamel collection!
Measurements: When worn as the longer "night" version, the earrings hang approximately 3" in total length, measuring 7/8" at the widest point, and 1/4" at the thickest point. The detachable "day" surmounts hang 7/8" long, and measure 1/4" wide.
Condition: The earrings remain in very good antique condition. The existing surface wear is commensurate with age, and is minor. There is some light surface wear to the enamel design in a few areas, but the overall motif remains intact. The earring surmounts and wires are intact and in good condition. The gold setting is free of any significant dents or scratches.
