Retro 14kt Reverse Carved Essex Crystal Hunting Dog Cufflinks
Reverse carved crystal is a technique created by cutting rock crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then is painted by hand in reverse. From the front, the picture appears to be almost three-dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were the most common motifs.
These Retro (ca1940s) era Essex Crystal cufflinks are a beautiful example of the reverse carved rock crystal technique. Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, each displays the profiled image of a loyal hunting dog, most likely an American Foxhound or Beagle, resting atop a shimmering Mother of Pearl background. The realistic looking dogs have gentle brown eyes, soft floppy ears, and textured elongated snouts. Each round crystal is set into a smoothly polished 14kt yellow gold bezel and attaches to an angled airplane cufflink backing. Both ends of the rotating bars feature polished pyramid details, adding subtle elegance and the posts are marked "14K". These cufflinks would be a very special gift for any canine lover and would look fabulous worn by a man or woman.
Measurements: The cufflinks measure approximately 5/8" in diameter, including the gold bezel. The crystal motif is just under 1/4" in depth. The cufflink post provides 9/16" of space for a shirt cuff, and each rotating whaleback measures 3/4" long and 3/16" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the cufflinks is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or airplane back, which are in good working condition. The carved rock crystal links and Mother of Pearl backings are intact and free of any apparent damage.
