Victorian Large Sterling Gilt Bohemian Garnet Encrusted Heart Locket

SKU: MWEC11

$2,895
Bohemian garnet jewelry dates back to the 19th century. During this time, garnets were one of the most popular types of stones used in jewelry production. The garnets were often placed close together in an effort to produce a more pronounced color and brightness than when they were set singularly. Most often, bohemian garnet jewelry was set in a closed back setting crafted in rose gold gilt over silver; this method is sometimes referred to as 'garnet gold'.

An absolutely gorgeous Bohemian garnet locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in rosy sterling silver gilt, this beautiful heart-shaped locket, which is particularly large in size, is completely encrusted with faceted garnet stones on the front. The vibrant garnets rest in a shared prong setting and are all similar in size, beautifully faceted, and display lush hues of deep reds which look fiery when they catch the light. On the back of the hinged locket is a glass covered space, perfect for storing a special photograph or keepsake inside. The piece hangs from a simple ring bail at the top attached to a short channel in the center, and would hang nicely from a favorite chain. A real beauty, this stunning locket has a sweet and feminine look, and would be a perfect addition to any collection!

Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 2 1/8" long (including the bail), is approximately 1 5/8" wide and 3/8" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver gilt setting or to the bohemian garnet stones, all of which are secure and intact. The locket opens easily and closes securely, and the bail is secure and in excellent working condition.
