Product Details

Berlin iron was produced in the Gleiwitz Foundry in Silesia, a mineral rich area within the borders of Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic in the 1790s. Previously, iron jewelry had primarily been worn in periods of mourning due to its dark color. However, it reached a high point of popularity between 1813 and 1819. To fund the War of Liberation against Napolean, citizens were asked to donate their precious gold in exchange for iron jewelry, which was sometimes inscribed with a portrait of Frederick William III of Prussia or the words "Gold gab ich für Eisen" (meaning "I gave gold for iron") or "Für das Wohl des Vaterlands" ("For the welfare of our country/fatherland"). Almost overnight, Berlin iron jewelry became a symbol of patriotism. Authentic pieces of Berlin iron jewelry are now very rare, and well-preserved pieces have become very collectible!

Incredible and rare Berlin Iron earrings from the Georgian (ca1825) era! These earrings are relatively substantial in length, and are comprised of an intricate filigree design forming the shape of a hollow vessel. The earrings display a soft black color which provides a dramatic appeal, and they swing with lovely movement from a decorative topper. The filigree design is comprised of scalloped edges and floral motifs to create a feminine lacy appearance, and fine beadwork is found throughout each piece, with a single bead capping the base. The gorgeous 8-point star motif surmount is attached to a 14kt yellow gold wire at the top, allowing the earrings to dangle with lovely movement. Very lightweight and comfortable to wear, these exceptional pair of Georgian earrings blend seamlessly into modern fashion, and are a must for the Berlin Iron collector!

Measurements: The earrings hang approximately 3 3/8" long (including the wires at the top), and measure approximately 1/2" wide and thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the Berlin Iron filigree wirework. The earring wires are secure and in good working condition.
