Victorian Gold-Filled Skull + Moss Agate Pendant with Moving French Paste Eyes
An unusual moss agate Memento Mori pendant from the Victorian (1880s) era! This intriguing piece features a fabulous 3-dimensional gold-filled skull which is riveted into the surface of a rich moss agate plaque. The large, oval-shaped translucent agate stone is smoothly polished and exhibits a rich icy grey blue color with deep natural green inclusions throughout which mimic the appearance of live moss. Found inside of each eye socket is a sparkling French paste stone which is loosely set to allow for movement, adding a fun yet mysterious appeal to the pendant. The large pendant hangs from a modern gold-plated sterling bail which is stamped "S925" on the inside, ready to secure it to a favorite chain. This fabulous pendant would be an excellent addition to any Memento Mori collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs an overall 2 1/8" long, including the bail. The moss agate plaque measures approximately 1 5/8" long and 1 1/4" wide.
Condition: The pendant is in overall excellent antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the gold-filled skull and its paste eyes are intact. The moss agate stone, which is intact and secure, has a very minor chip along the outside edge, however, due to its the location, it is not noticeable when worn. The bail is secure and in good working condition.
