Pawn jewelry and Old Pawn refers to a longstanding Native American tradition. Turquoise jewelry, often considered to have healing qualities, was highly treasured, worn in ceremonials, and passed from one generation to another. However, it also served as a form of emergency currency in times of need (such as poor harvest or family illness).  The pawn jewelry was forfeited and placed in the possession of an authorized trader, who would hold it for a predetermined amount of time. If the original owner couldn't repay the debt in time, the pawn jewelry was sold. "Old Pawn" pieces are those that were left unclaimed or never repaid, and thus forever separated from their original families and owners. This bittersweet loss of special family heirlooms during times of crisis has contributed to the sentimental value surrounding true Old Pawn jewelry, which is now considered very collectible.

This vintage American Indian necklace from the 1950s is a wonderful example of Pawn jewelry! The necklace is handcrafted in silver with an untouched patina on the surface. A row of hollow silver beads are strung on wire to form the necklace, meeting at a hook clasp in the back. Five natural turquoise Bird/Talon Claw links hang from the center in a festoon style. Each turquoise stone is encased in a closed back setting that hugs the bezel. The turquoise stones vary in size and shape, each displaying a gorgeous sky blue color with marbled veins of matrix throughout. The necklace has a striking appearance and would appeal to any turquoise lover or collector of Native American jewelry. A beautiful and sentimental piece of history, this handmade heirloom is very special indeed!

Measurements: The necklace measures 15 1/2” long from end to end (including the hook clasps). The turquoise stones vary in shape and size. The center and rest of the claw links are 1 1/4" long and measure about 1/4” wide, and 1/4" at the thickest point. The silver beads measure 7mm in diameter.

Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is very good. There is light surface wear to the silver setting, but no apparent damage. All of the turquoise stones are intact and in good condition. The darkened patina is normal and adds depth to the design, however the silver could be polished for a brighter look if desired. The hook clasps fasten securely, and the stringing is intact.
