Pique was a decorative style popular in the 18th and 19th century and entailed inlaying a fine pattern of gold or silver into tortoise shell. The metal would be heated to a very high temperature and then pressed directly into the surface of the tortoise shell. Once cool, the tortoise secures around the metal. Now a banned material, Antique tortoise shell jewelry has become very collectible.

These earrings are a beautiful example of the pique art form!  Made of a very rich, dark tortoise shell, the earrings are from the Victorian period (ca1880). They are decorated with an intricate and elaborate 14kt yellow gold star design. The earrings are comprised of two half-sphere shapes, one slightly larger than the other. Inlaid in each are multiple 5 and 6 point 14kt gold stars throughout the entire surface of each half-sphere.  The wires are riveted into the top, smaller sphere which swings freely for the bottom, larger sphere. These stunning earrings are in beautiful condition.

Measurements: The approximate measurement of the smaller half sphere has a diameter of 1/2" and is1/4" thick. The larger half sphere has a diameter of a little more than 3/4" and is 1/2" thick. Each earring measures 1 1/2" tall from the top of the smaller sphere to the bottom of the larger sphere.

Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent.  There is no other apparent damage to the tortoise shell or the inlay gold.
